Every year I try to enter a cake in our Fall Fair cake decorating contest, so far I have entered a cake every year for the past three years. I have posted about my past cakes in earlier posts:
Last year’s Cake,
Two years ago.
This year, the theme was “Uxbridge, The Place to Bee”. So I imagined a cake with Bee’s at the fair instead of people.
The Bee population is diminishing worldwide and our town wanted to bring that to the attention.
My competition had cakes in the shape of a bee-hive, bee’s and a combination of the two. When my husband walked in with my cake, it was too heavy to carry myself, he could hear disappointing groans from some of the other cake decorators.
I just enjoy telling a story with my cake and that is what exactly what I did. Our fair is a big thing for the community, this is where you meet everyone after the summer. It is a typical rural community and therefore people display their fruits, plants, crafts etc.
Another big part of the fair is the tractor pull, the demolition derby and the fairway with all the rides for the kids, big and small.
So on my cake I recreated part of the fair with a Ferris wheel, the demolition derby scene, the bandstand with a performing Bee and a booth where you can get the most awesome lemonades.
Everything on my cake is edible. The Ferris wheel was the most nerve wrecking part of the cake, I wasn’t sure if it was going to work and I did not have time to figure out another technique. Luckily it worked. I used icing sugar and egg white to “glue” the pretzels together that form the Ferris wheel. I mainly used marshmallow fondant for the decorative items on the cake and some licorice.
I won the first prize with this cake and I got the most incredible compliment afterwards.
The comity asked me not to enter a cake next year. I have won the competition three years in a row and they want to give someone else a chance.
In the picture above you see my little helpers. The two oldest kids are mine and the other two are my sister’s girls.
It was a bit of a family affair. The kids made some of the bees and my husband made pillars for the cake covering for when the cake was displayed.
