Fun Cake Decorating Ideas – Seasonal Cakes – Igloo Cake

We are in Canada at the moment and we have had some snow, not as much as previous years, but enough to have a white Christmas.

So, just before Christmas, my husband decided to build an igloo. We have tried to build an igloo before, but never actually finished one.

Last summer we were visiting family in Holland and one of my uncles built an igloo in his backyard last winter and he showed us the pictures. This was quite an achievement for two reasons, Holland does not get a lot of snow in the winter anymore and the backyards of  most people are very small.

He gave us a great idea on how to build an igloo, he used plastic crates. It is because of this that we decided to build an igloo and do it bigger and better since we are in Canada and we usually have lots of snow and in general bigger backyards.

We used rectangular plastic baskets that we have in our car for the groceries. This worked like a charm and after a few days, this was the result.

We even put solar lighting inside. I got a solar panel with a string of glowing dragonflies for my birthday last year and they usually live in our garden. This made for very festive lighting inside.

We planned on sleeping inside one night but on new-years eve it was unusually warm and the whole igloo melted.

Now, why would I tell you this whole story on a cake decorating ideas site?

Well, my husband’s birthday was just before Christmas and I still did not know what sort of cake I was going to make him for his birthday. So the day before his birthday, while he was finishing the igloo, I decided to create an igloo cake for him and started to make his birthday cake.

It worked great that I could see him working outside on our igloo through the kitchen window. In that case, when he decided to come inside I could quickly hide all the evidence. This is always tricky for me since we home-school and work from home. So when I make the cakes for my kids or husband, I always have to make sure they don’t walk into the kitchen and spoil the surprise.

This is finished cake, and I was quite pleased with the result. It only took me a few hours to create.

The cake was a great hit and all the visitors were impressed by both igloo’s.
