Butterfly Cake

Here is a cake that I did not make myself. This one was made by my sister.

Cake decorating runs in the family, my mother has been decorating cakes for years and after a while I sort of took over.

My sister does not make cakes very often but ever since she has had her own kids, she has made cakes for them almost every year. I do get to make their cakes once in a while and sometimes her girls just get two cakes, one from mommy and one from their aunty Amanda.

My sister made this cake for her oldest daughter Alicia, who turned three that year. She will be turning seven this year, it doesn’t seem that long ago and I can’t believe it has almost been four years since then.
Her daughter is a real girly girl and loves bright colours, like any little girl does.

My sister happened to have a heart shaped baking pan and wanted to create something different than a heart cake for her daughter. Little kids are really more in to their animals or TV characters. After some brainstorming on the kind of animal or TV character to make, my sister decided that a butterfly would be easily made from two heart cakes.

To decorate the cake she choose her daughter’s favourite colours: pink, yellow and purple and decorated it completely with butter cream icing. The details, like the eyes, the mouth and the antennae are made with smarties and licorice.

I am proud of my sister and the cake tasted pretty good too ;0)
