Fun Cake Decorating Ideas – Character Cakes – Barbie Cake

Barbie CakeThis was the very first Barbie cake I made, about 6 years ago.

A friend of mine just turned 40 and she absolutely loves Barbie. For her birthday she organised a Barbie and Ken party. So you see, it is not just little girls that love their Barbies. And I assure you that doing a cake like this is like playing with Barbies all over again.

She rented a restaurant and all guests were dressed as Barbie or Ken. We dressed in some typical 70’s clothes that a lot of older barbies have. My husband even found an old wooden tennis racket and some sweat-bands to make his “sporty” Ken impression look the part.

Some people really took to their role as Ken and Barbie seriously and never strayed from it.

The cake was a lot of fun to do. Barbie was put on top of a cake to make sure all the guests would have a piece of cake, and this way I also had room to put some writing on the cake

The guest of honour loved the cake and there was enough cake for all the guests without having to undress Barbie ;0)

I used a quite a bit of marshmallow fondant to sculpt Barbie’s dress. Doing a cake like this makes you feel a bit like a fashion queen. You can basically design any dress you like. I have since done a few more cakes where I dress up Barbie and each one is completely different and moreΒ extravagant than the previous.

For the lettering on the cake, I first went onto my computer and found a nice font. Then I printed the name fairly large and cut the fondant to what I printed.

Since this cake I have done a few more cakes involving a Barbie doll. Either as an “extra”, like the cake in this post, or all dressed up.

I will post about my other lavishly dressed-up Barbie cakes sometime in the future, in the meantime, enjoy this cake and for more Fun Cake Decorating ideas with step by step instructions, go to Fun Cake Decorating Ideas.
