Recently it was my dad’s Birthday. I have made quite a few cakes for him and they always have a hunting theme or something with deer.
So, this year I thought I try something different.
During the winter, when deer-hunting season is over, my dad really enjoys ice-fishing. I have gone ice-fishing for a weekend with my dad last year as well, as I enjoy fishing from time to time.
I came up with the idea to create an ice-fishing scene, including an ice-fishing hut, for his birthday cake. The hut really gave me some trouble.
I wanted to have everything on the cake to be edible and therefore create the hut out of edible items as well. The plan was to just use pretzel sticks with icing sugar and egg white as glue but this would not stay up. In the end I used some lasagna to hold up the hut, so in the end it is not entirely edible but close enough. It would have been too easy to create a cardboard or plastic box.
The cake is my favourite sponge cake recipe and I used icing to cover the cake and some icing sugar to create the illusion of snow on the ice.
My dad (on the cake) and the fish are made of marshmallow fondant. The fishing line is made from the same fondant.
I don’t think he has ever caught that many fish on a single day ;o)
It almost looks like he is fishing on a piece of drift ice, which would have been a really cool scene too.
When we have birthday parties, people are almost as excited to see what kind of birthday cake I have created as they are to see and congratulate the birthday boy or girl. This makes it challenging for me too. I need to come up with different creations each time and try to top the previous one.
I think, once again, I succeeded because the comments were all very positive.
