This is a cake I made for the local Fall Fair two years ago. Like many towns in Canada and the USA, Uxbridge has it’s own Fall Fair. It is one of the biggest happenings in town and this is where you meet everyone in town and people you may not have seen for a while.
The Fair has it’s fair share of activities, like horse-pull, lawnmower races, tractor pull, demolition derby, several horsemanship competitions, a big fair ground with rides for young and old and much much more.
There are also a few barns where people showcase their biggest pumpkins, the weirdest shaped fruits and veggies and so on. Another barn showcases crafts of all sorts. This is where I entered my cake.
Every year there is a theme for the Fair and this year the theme was celebrating health and the 50th anniversary of the hospital in town.
I decided to make a cake with happy people and people doing healthy activities. There is a family picnicking, a guy walking his dog, a boy playing soccer and a mother with her baby feeding a duck. I know that the cake and the icing and fondant I used to decorate the cake with in itself are not too healthy for you, but what do you expect of a cake? The leaves of the tree are made of pumpkin seeds, so I did put in some healthy stuff.
My kids helped me create some of the characters and the placement of them. They really enjoy helping me.
The sign posts point to all the different types of health practitioners in town. And I spent a lot of time and effort in making the cake very colourful and vibrant. The cake was quite large and very heavy, it was a good thing we have a van. To create the park-like scene I baked two large square cakes, which I then put on a big board that I had my husband cut to fit the cake. This has now become my cake board.
This was the winning cake at the fair and the cool thing is that right after the judging, the cakes are being cut up and dished out to anyone who wants some.
I have only been entering cakes at the Fair for the past few years, mainly because we usually live in New Zealand. The past two years I won first prize and people are already looking forward to my next creation. They are lucky because we are in Canada for one more year, so I will enter another cake this year.
