Fun cake decorating ideas – Portrait Cakes – Baby Basket

Cake of a baby basket

I have been baking and decorating cakes for years. A lot of cakes I made are for friends and family and not one is ever the same.

When I was looking through my photos of all the cakes I have decorated in the past years, I came across this one.

I made this one almost 7 years ago. It doesn’t seem that long though. One of our friends was having her second child a few months after I had my second one. (that is sort of how I know how long ago this was)

When my friend had her baby, I made this cake to bring to her in the hospital. I did not know what the baby would look like, what I did know was that it was a girl.

The little girl’s older brother is my girl’s best friend and he is a red head. So I figured his sister would be red too.

It turned out that I was right about the red hair and it was even curled like I decorated her on the cake, the cake actually resembled her very much.

To make the cake, I used my favourite recipe for my sponge cake. Then I created fondant from marshmallows.

I weaved the basket and made the hood like it just folded down, wrinkles and all. I used food colouring to colour the fondant I used for the head, the blanket and the hair.

The basket is surrounded by green coconut, which I coloured as well. This way it looks like mom is out on a picnic with her newborn.

This is one of the cakes in my “Fun Cake Decorating Ideas” book, which you can get here.

The creation of this cake and many more are described in much more detail in my Fun Cake Decorating Ideas book.
