Fun cake decorating ideas – Fantasy Cakes – Fairies

Fairy Tale Cake

Here is another birthday cake I did for a daughter of a good friend of mine. Her daughter turned 5 and we were visiting them for a week. She used to live right close to us in Whangarei, New Zealand but now lives close to Palmerston North, which is a good 8 hours away. So as you can understand, we did not go there just for the birthday party.

To create this cake I had to do with whatever was available as far as cooking and baking tools was concerned. I did not take my entire cake decorating kit along. My friend’s daughter loves fairy tales and fairies, so I decided that that was going to be my theme for this cake.

The shape and size of the cake was, again, dependent on the tools available.

I made and decorated the cake while the birthday girl was in school. This did not give me a lot of time, since she was only turning 5, she wasn’t going to school for full days yet.

She had no idea I was making this, or any, cake for her. She was so surprised and so happy with the cake that we were not allowed to cut it until much later and until everyone had seen it.

I used my favourite recipe for my sponge cake and decorated the cake with icing and created the leaves and flower pellets from fondant made out of marshmallows. For the flower bud right a the top I used paper cupcake liners.

The fairies and the ladybugs complete the picture.

I have a lot more Fun Cake Decorating ideas in my “Fun Cake Decorating Ideas” book, which you can get here.

  1. This is stunning! I had a good look at some of your other cakes too – you are one talented woman! They are gorgeous!

I was so sad when my kids got to the age where they no longer wanted birthday parties – they were both born on the same day, but a year apart, and I LOVED kids birthday parties, I even thought about it as a business at one point. They were mostly fancy dress parties, and I used to get dressed up too. Such fun! But my cakes were not as professional looking as this one!

Making fondant out of marshmallows sounds interesting, it would be way nicer than the plastic looking icing you can buy – like a brick! I just used to use butter icing, but no way could you do things like the fairy dress!

    Yum!

      Thank-you Annie,

so glad you like my cakes.
Oh, I’m not looking forward to the day when my kids don’t want a birthday party! But of course they are only 7 and 9, so we still have time. ;o)

And I STILL love having birthday parties, so maybe that will be hereditary! ;o)

Thanks for being my constant support! You’re so wonderful! ;o)

      Cheers…Amanda…Excited Life Enthusiast! ;o)
