Fun Cake Decorating Ideas – Specialty Cakes – Blankie

This is the cake I made for my son’s fourth birthday. It represents his “Blankie”.

When my daughter was born, my sister made a little quilt blanket for her. My daughter liked it but was not really attached to it. She was and is really attached to her Teddy she got from her Grandmommy.

Then, two years later, she suddenly had a little baby brother. She was there throughout the whole birth experience and was really happy to have a little brother.

Two days after her brother was born, she thought it was time to give him a present and thank him for being her little brother. Our little girl is very thoughtful and loves to give. So she went to get her blanket and gave it to her baby brother. She didn’t really use it and she figured he could use one.

Now, this blanket was an absolute hit and even today (he turned 7 four months ago) he still brings his blankie everywhere and will not sleep without it.

So, to use this blankie theme for his birthday cake when he turned four, was not a hard choice to make. (The picture of the blankie is not that clear as the cake, but you get the idea)

To create the blankie I used marshmallow fondant and just left it white. Then once I draped it over the cake, I indented it to mimic the stitches and the frills and painted the various animals and quilt pieces on with food colouring.

This was a great cake to do and fairly easy, you can get as detailed as you like with these sort of cakes.
