Fun Cake Decorating Ideas – Vehicle Cakes – Digger Cake

Digger cakeThis was a very fun cake to do and before I started, I had no idea how I would tackle this one.

Friends of ours, we met during the ante-natal classes, now have two sons. The oldest boy was born just a few weeks after our daughter. This boy was, and still is, into everything that rides.

When he was just one and a half he would race around the house on one of those little ride-on toddler cars. He would go very fast and had a lot of control, he even managed to drift through every corner. It was hilarious. I think he got his first motor cycle at the age of four.

His parents are also into cars, mostly hot-rods, street-rods and classic cars, so he didn’t get this from a stranger.

Anyhow, this little boy wanted a digger cake for his second birthday. I think he saw a lot of diggers when his parents were clearing a piece of land to build their new house on.

Luckily we have had our share of diggers around our place as well, so I had a bit of an idea of what a digger looks like. I wanted to create something special and more 3D than just a cake in the shape of a digger.

The cake, as always, was my favourite sponge cake recipe. I had to cut and shape and think of a way to make a nice 3D cake. I decided to use licorice to hold up the roof and hold out the scoop to create the 3D effect. The black on the tires are also licorice. The grass was made of coconut shavings painted green and the gravel was brown sugar. This clumps quite nicely and looked real cool. For the finishing touch, I sprinkled a few candies in the grass to create the effect of flowers.

The little man in the seat was a candy. The candy man was not to scale at all. I did not intend to have an operator and then I saw this little guy and decided to put him in control of this digger.

This cake had to be delivered to the birthday party and as I have mentioned in other posts before, our driveway and the roads in New Zealand are all but flat and straight. We put the cake on the floor in the front at the passenger side, so I could keep an eye on it. The top did wobble a few times, but the cake made it in one piece.

The cake was a great success and you would think it would be gone in no time. Instead they actually put this cake in the freezer for a while. Our friends couldn’t bare to cut the cake up, they liked it so much. We had to do with chips and other goodies that birthday, the cake was reserved for another day ;0)
