Fun Cake Decorating Ideas – Birthday Cakes – My Castle Cake

Amanda's Birthday Castle CakeIt was my birthday on Tuesday, as you would know if you read my blog regularly. I posted a cake that my husband and kids decorated for me a few years ago. This does not happen very often, that my husband makes cakes that is. I like making cakes myself too much to let him do it.

This year I actually will have my birthday party a week and a half after my actual birthday, so I did not make a cake for my actual birthday because I wanted to wait for the party to make mine.

So, my husband and the kids made a cake instead. This is the second time ever that this happened. I knew they were planning on doing it, so I left the recipe for a cake on the kitchen counter and took some pre-made leftover icing out of the freezer. I had to go away for most of the day on my birthday.

My husband and the kids decided it was a good idea to make a cake and surprise mommy, as she was sort of expecting a cake. They followed the recipe and the kids actually already knew what to do and coached my husband through the process.

When the cake came out of the oven and it was put on the cake platform, the cake was too big. So the decision was made to cut off the overlapping edges.
Now what to do, I am sure my husband and the kids were very tempted to just eat the off-cuts. Instead they decided to put the off-cuts on the cake and create some sort of a castle.

The left over icing that came out of the freezer had a dark-brownish colour and since that was the only icing , they used it to cover the whole cake. To make it look a bit more appealing, the kids added some of their dolls and made flowers with marshmallows.

As I said before, I was not having a party, but my parents, my sister and her kids were here as well as the four of us and we all enjoyed the cake.

I was pleasantly surprised at the creativity of the cake.

Anyhow, I just wanted to share this with you while it was still fresh in my mind. I’ll show off the cake I’ll be making for my party at a later date. (I haven’t got a clue yet what it will be)
