Fun Cake Decorating Ideas – Animal Cakes – Ladybug Piñata

This is a cake I made almost 2 years ago for my niece. She will be turning 7 this year already. Does time ever fly or what.

My niece wanted a piñata, what is it with kids nowadays wanting to bash their favourite characters anyways? After talking to my sister, I decided to bake my famous family recipe for a sponge cake and kill two birds with one stone by creating a piñata cake.

To make this cake into a piñata cake, I decided to make a chocolate ladybug. I decided on a ladybug because it is girly and a ladybug is easily made when you use a regular plastic bowl as a mold for your chocolate.

Chocolate is the best choice for the piñata part of a cake like this. It is easy to mold and when it is finished it is nice and hard so the kids can smash it.

You can make any type of animal or person, depending on the form or mold you use. And when you use different colours of chocolate, you can give the animal or person more character. Just make sure you do your colouring first because the first layer of chocolate in your mold will be the outside.

Once the cake and chocolate are done, put a good amount of candies on the cake and cover it with the chocolate figure you made.

I put a good amount of candies on my cake, mostly jellybeans and smarties or m&m’s, before I put my chocolate ladybug on top of the cake.

As a finishing touch, I put a cupcake on top of the ladybug. It was like the ladybug was bringing my niece a special little cake for her alone with the 5-candle on top of it.

My niece really enjoyed her cake and she only needed two hits to reveal the candies. It is amazing how kids immediately know what the intention is of a cake like this. We had her use a meat-pounder to break the ladybug after she blew out the candle and took the cupcake of.

My niece now sort of expects me to make a cake for all of her birthdays. (Who would blame her?)
